JAY S. EFRAN, PH.D. is Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Temple University. He is the recipient of the Pennsylvania Psychological Association’s 2009 award for Distinguished Contributions to the Science and Profession of Psychology and the 2006 Lifetime Achievement Award of the Constructivist Psychology Network. Over the years, he has also been honored with two teaching awards—one from the University of Rochester and one from Temple University.
At Temple, he served as director of clinical training for nearly a decade, followed by an additional decade as director of their Psychological Services Center. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association (including divisions 12, 29, 32, and 49) and of the American Group Psychotherapy Association. He served as president of the Academic Division of the Pennsylvania Psychological Association and was twice elected President of the Philadelphia Area Group Psychotherapy Society.
Dr. Efran was consultant on groups and group training at Friend’s Hospital from 1976 to 1986, and his work with groups includes research on the effectiveness of time-limited groups for socially phobic individuals. A therapist for more than 60 years, Dr. Efran has co-authored a book on psychotherapy (W. W. Norton) and a self-help book on addiction (St. Martin’s Press). In addition, he has published approximately 120 professional articles and chapters on topics such as psychotherapy, emotion, social phobia, addiction, and constructivism.
Dr. Efran has “side interests” in magic and special effects that he has often combined with his work as a psychologist and psychotherapy supervisor. Thus, he taught workshops in magic for therapists at six of the well-known Psychotherapy Networker Symposium Conferences in Washington, DC. He also performed at most of the recent banquets of the Constructivist Psychology Network. A member of the Society of American Magicians, Dr. Efran was appointed technical director for the Victorian Theatre Program of the Ebenezer Maxwell Museum—Philadelphia’s only authentically restored Victorian house-museum. In that capacity, he has been designing illusions for their annual murder mysteries as well as for four productions of Sherlock Holmes classics. His special effects have won awards from the Mt. Airy Neighborhood Alliance and the Philadelphia City Council. Recent local productions include If the Slipper Fits (for the Philly Fringe), The Wizard of Oz and Once Upon a Mattress (for the Narberth Community Theatre), and Dead Man’s Cell Phone (for the Spotlight Theatre in Swarthmore).
