The presentation will focus on Problem-Solving Therapy, an empirically-supported brief cognitive-behavioral approach to helping people cope and adjust to major and minor life events.
Emphasis will be on problem-solving therapy for persons with medical conditions such as cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes, HIV, and cardiac disorders; discussion and examples of problem-solving therapy’s application to treatment of anxiety and depression will also be highlighted as they pertain to COVID and COVID-related stressors.
Methods of instruction will include interactive lecture, video demonstrations, worksheets, and audience practice.
Objectives:
- Describe the social problem-solving model of distress.
- Assess clients’ social problem-solving abilities.
- Explain how reducing stress can improve problem-solving.
- Explain how to adapt problem-solving therapy for different uses.
Dr. Felgoise is a licensed clinical psychologist certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology in Clinical Psychology who has practiced clinical health psychology for over 25 years. As a coauthor of Helping Cancer Patients Cope: A Problem-Solving Approach (APA, 1998), Dr. Felgoise’s clinical and academic career has focused on clinical practice and research on problem solving, quality of life, and adjustment in caregivers of, and persons diagnosed with cancer, cardiac disorders, end stage kidney disease, ALS, irritable bowel syndrome, and other disorders. Dr. Felgoise is Professor and Chair of the Department of Clinical Psychology, Director of the PsyD Program in Clinical Psychology, and Associate Dean of Academic Integration in the School of Professional and Applied Psychology, and Director of Interprofessional Education at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, her academic home of 23+ years.
In her academic role, Dr. Felgoise teaches doctoral courses in Problem-Solving Therapy with Medical Patients, Research Methods, Integrative Health Care, Integrative Behavioral Health Seminar, and courses integrating medical students, nursing students, psychology, and counseling students in simulations and experiential learning. She also is Associate Editor for the Journal of Clinical Psychology, and Consulting Editor for the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, Professional Psychology: Research and Practice, and Clinical Psychology: Science and Practice. Dr. Felgoise’s clinical practices focuses on couples’ relational and sexual health, and couples’ and individuals’ coping and adjustment to life stressors such as medical stressors, milestone transitions, grief and loss, and improving overall quality of life. Personally, Dr. Felgoise’s greatest joy is her family, and she engages in regular self-care through swimming, exercising, yoga, kayaking, gardening, travelling, playing board games and jigsaw puzzles, and reading
