This presentation provides psychologists with an introduction to sleep, its basic mechanisms, assumed function(s), and the potential costs of significant sleep disturbance. The primary psychological interventions for sleep disturbance with a focus on insomnia are reviewed. Common roadblocks and ancillary interventions that are supported by the evidence base are also examined.

Objectives:

  1. List the stages of human sleep
  2. Identify three negative consequences of prolonged sleep disturbance
  3. Describe the five components of CBT-I
  4. List three common behavioral or environmental obstacles for healthy sleep
  5. Identify one motivational intervention to improve treatment adherence and sleep.

Sean Healey, Psy.D. is a licensed psychologist in independent practice located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His primary professional interests are in assisting individuals living with chronic illness while maintaining a high quality of life and demonstrating the value of professional psychology for individual and community health.

Dr. Healey completed his psychological internship in Clinical and Primary Care Psychology at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center with rotations in the Family Medical Center, Inpatient Psychiatry (Adult and Geropsychiatry) and Consultation-Liaison Service across various clinics. His training and experience includes working with individuals with sleep disorders, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, functional gastrointestinal conditions, HIV/AIDs and other autoimmune diseases, chronic pain, and neurological conditions (ALS, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and traumatic brain injury). He also conducts pre-surgical and pre-treatment psychological evaluations.

Dr. Healey provides consultation and training services and has written for psychological and medical publications and presented at psychological and medical conferences on a range of integrated health concerns. He is a member of the Pennsylvania Psychological Association, where he chairs the Insurance Committee and also serves on the Integrated Care Committee.
