This presentation will cover what every mental health provider who works with individuals of childbearing age should know about perinatal mental health. Participants will learn about what defines the perinatal period, how to differentiate between normal postpartum adjustment and clinical symptoms of postpartum mental health disorders, best practices for treating perinatal mental health, including special considerations such as trauma and loss.

Objectives:

  1. Describe 3 biopsychosocial factors associated with perinatal mental health
  2. Differentiate between normal emotional adjustment to motherhood and clinically significant mental health concerns
  3. List the most common perinatal mental health concerns and screening tools
  4. Utilize screening tools (including the EPDS, PHQ-9, GAD-7)
  5. Summarize evidence based psychotherapeutic treatment models for perinatal mental health

Dr. Anna Fineberg is a licensed psychologist in private practice, and Clinical Assistant Professor at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, where she supervises psychiatry residents. She holds a BA in Psychology from Columbia University, and an MA and PhD in Clinical Psychology from Temple University. Dr. Fineberg is certified in perinatal mental health through Postpartum Support International. Her interest in perinatal mental health dates to her college years, when she first became involved in research on the impact of maternal stress and trauma on offspring development. She continued this program of research through graduate school, and wrote her dissertation on the impact of maternal psychosocial stress on the subsequent development of depressive symptoms in adolescent offspring.

She completed her pre- and post-doctoral internships and residency training at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center, where she developed a strong interest in treating trauma/PTSD and co-occurring conditions. Following her training, Dr. Fineberg became a VA staff psychologist, clinical supervisor, and member of the Internship Training Committee. In late 2019, she transitioned to private practice with a vision to merge her long-standing research and clinical interests, and grow a thriving practice specializing in perinatal mental health. She is grateful to her clients and referring providers for helping to make this vision a reality.
