Self-regulation is an essential skill necessary for children’s success in academics, social interactions and family relationships. Dr. Burke will present on the development and disruptions to self-regulation and the impact of the parent-child relationship. She will demonstrate various approaches and techniques to individual therapy and parent sessions to increase the self-regulation abilities of the child and family unit.

Techniques/Models to teach self-regulation to children-individual sessions
Techniques/Models to “coach” parents to model & teach self-regulation-parent sessions
Case presentation with curriculum examples.
Objectives:
1.Summarize the development of self-regulation
2. Describe the importance of self-regulation on academic and social success
3. Discuss how attachment styles may impact self-regulation
4. Apply two visual techniques to individual therapy sessions
5. Utilize “lending prefrontal cortex” techniques for parent coaching sessions
Dr. Margot Burke is a licensed child psychologist and the owner and director of Milestones Psychology and Wellness. She and her team are experts in providing effective therapy for children, adolescents and their families. Dr. Burke has 20 years’ experience in the field of autism and an extensive background in Applied Behavioral Analysis and Relationship Based Therapies. Dr. Burke is also a certified school psychologist, which provides her with outstanding knowledge in developmental and psychological evaluations as well as navigating the special education services in the schools. Dr. Burke has special interest in helping children and parents learn effective coping mechanisms through self-regulation.
