Two psychotherapists, Laura Silverstein, MSW, and Susan Carswell, Psy.D., Ph.D. (biology), who are certified in the couples therapy of John and Julie Gottman (Gottman Method Couples Therapy) , and Terry Real (Relational Life Therapy; RLT), respectively, will provide an overview of the theory and methods of each model and demonstrate how that each would be applied to a specific couples case, thereby elucidating the similarities, differences, and applicability of each approach.
Susan Carswell, Psy.D., Ph.D, is a licensed Psychologist who has had a private psychotherapy practice specializing in couples and adults with relationship issues in Media, PA for 12 years and has almost 20 years of experience as a mental health clinician. She is certified in Terry Real’s Relational Life Therapy for couples and also has advanced training as an EFT therapist, as well as additional training in the Gottman method. Prior to becoming a Psychologist, she had a 20-year long career as a Ph.D.-level research molecular and neurobiologist. She has been an adjunct professor, presented workshops and taught courses to mental health clinicians on the neurobiology and genetics of various psychological conditions and how these findings apply to psychotherapy.
Laura Silverstein, LCSW is the clinical director and co-owner of Main Line Counseling Partners, a group psychotherapy practice in Bryn Mawr. She specializes in couples therapy and is certified in the Gottman Method of couples therapy. She also works with children, families, and individual adults. Her approach is warm, balanced, and active. She has over 20 years of success helping people find more connection and happiness in their lives.
