Most mental health clinicians have had little exposure to working with addictions or with the concepts involved in recovery. And yet, Alcoholics Anonymous and similar 12-Step programs provide a worldview which addresses core psychotherapeutic issues, including vulnerability, acceptance of our finite nature, spirituality and the value of community. Furthermore, by following AA processes, and drawing from Bill Wilson’s own correspondence, we can develop a model of intervention which is directive and yet respectful of a patient’s autonomy.

This workshop will begin with a brief review of basic principles and practices of AA. We will then utilize these to illuminate the underlying principles which have much to offer practicing clinicians, and which transcend limitations of specific therapeutic models.

Objectives:

1. Describe the basic principles and mechanisms of behavior change found in the 12-Step process.

2. Identify 3 clinical interventions which derive from the 12-Step model.

3. Use the insights of the 12-Step model to develop priorities in psychotherapeutic treatment.
