Let’s Talk About Sex! Practical Tools to Expand Discussion Involving Sexual Themes in Clinical Work

This workshop aims to promote familiarity and build tools to discuss important sexuality topics across clinical contexts (e.g., individual therapy, relationship therapy, family therapy, behavioral medicine, assessment/evaluation, etc.). The workshop will be comprised of a combination of brief psychoeducation for the purpose of familiarization and base knowledge for each topic, individual practice of process and insight-oriented tools, and small-group practice of application of tools in clinical settings. Tools for diversity awareness will be applied throughout. The workshop will begin with individual insight-oriented processing around bringing up sexual themes in therapy. Participants will have the option to select 3-5 additional topics. The remainder of the workshop will prioritize topics in order of expressed level of interest.

Topics would include:

Trans and non-binary gender identities

Sexual orientation

Kink & BDSM

Internet/Pornography

Sexual compulsivity/Sex addiction

Wishes, expectations, & desires

Sex & cancer

Sex & aging

Minor attraction

Objectives:

  1. Identify 1-3 sexuality myths that frequently emerge in clinical work.
  2. Define 1-3 personal social locations and/or diversity factors which influence their perception of sexuality themes.
  3. Employ 1-3 tools to expand discussion of sexuality topics in clinical work.

Dr. Alishia Kalos is a Pennsylvania and New Jersey licensed clinical psychologist and sex therapist certified by the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT). Dr. Kalos provides individual, group, couples, and comprehensive psychosexual and forensic assessment services to adults in English and Spanish. Dr. Kalos is an instructor in the Systemic Sex Therapy post-graduate certificate program at the Council For Relationships and runs the Loving and Living through Cancer sexuality group series at MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper University Hospital. Areas of clinical focus include sexual and relational concerns, “unusual” sexual interests, anxiety disorders, perinatal and postpartum depression and anxiety as well as cancer and chronic illness related sexuality concerns. In addition, Dr. Kalos provides sexual offense and domestic violence specific mental health services.
