The need for behavioral health services in primary care and the most common ways psychologists engage in integrated care will be review. Participants will be asked to engage throughout the presentation and share recommendations, successful strategies, and pitfalls they have experienced/are aware of in this setting. Evidence based strategies for the treatment of depression and anxiety in primary care settings/working with primary care patients will also be reviewed.
Objectives:
- Explain the need for behavioral health services in primary care.
- Discuss ways behavioral health consultants can provide services in primary care settings.
- Explain several evidence-based approaches to the treatment of depression in a primary care setting.
- Explain several evidence-based approaches to the treatment of anxiety in a primary care setting.
Dr. Julie Radico works as a behavioral health specialist and associate professor in Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center’s Family and Community Medicine Department. She is Board Certified in Clinical Health Psychology. She earned her doctoral degree in clinical psychology and master’s degrees (clinical psychology & counseling and clinical health psychology) at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Radico completed her postdoctoral fellowship in the department of Family Medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
Dr. Radico serves on the American Psychological Association’s (APA) Membership Board (2019-2021). She also serves on the Pennsylvania Psychological Association’s (PPA) Board of Directors (Public Interest Chair), Integrated Care Committee (chair), Early Career Psychologist (ECP) Committee, and the Emerging Leaders Program Team (director). Dr. Radico is also secretary/president elect for the American Academy of Clinical Health Psychology Board, serves on the APA Society for Health Psychologists Early Career Psychologist Council, and chairs the Psychologist Group of Penn State Hershey. Dr. Radico serves on the 2019-2021 Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) Nominating Committee.
Dr. Radico completed the STFM Behavioral Science/Family Systems Educator Fellowship in 2018. She received the 2018 Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching at Penn State Health and the 2018-2019 Thomas L. Leaman, M.D. Chair’s Award Family & Community Medicine. She received the PPA 2017 Early Career Psychologist Award. Additionally, she has presented seminars and posters at APA, PPA, and STFM Conferences and her research focus includes resident precepting, the ACGME Milestones, and promotion for Women in Academic Medicine.
