A mentor is an individual with expertise who can help develop the career of a mentee.  Most often, it occurs when the mentor builds trust, provides support, and models positive behavior with the mentee.  In the PSCP Covid-era context, mentors typically meet with their mentee individually but with each person in a remote setting.  This program will examine the roles of the mentor and mentee, the etiquette of mentoring, mentoring someone from a different culture, cross-age and cross-gender mentoring, and the stages of mentoring.   APA ethical issues will be explored as will mentoring agreements.   This presentation invites participant to share their experience as a mentor or mentee.

Objectives:

  1. Describe the roles of mentor and mentee
  2. Identify aspects of mentoring someone from a different culture
  3. List the stages of mentoring
  4. List at least 4 ethical considerations in mentoring

Bob Jann has practiced psychology for over 30 years.  In that time he has worked with many children and teens in office settings. He gradually incorporated telehealth into his practice.  He transitioned to an exclusively Telehealth practice (eight months before anyone ever heard of Covid-19). He has obtained the PSYPACT APIT and the ASPPB E. Passport.  His orientation was originally psychodynamic but later training has been in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.  His approach to each client is eclectic, though, mindful of the client’s age, psychological development, needs and other characteristics.  In addition to his clinical work, he spent over 30 years working as a school psychologist.  Bob holds a PhD from Temple University’s School Psychology program and did a clinical internship at Eastern State School and Hospital. Bob is a member of the American Psychological Association, the Pennsylvania Psychological Association, the New Jersey Association of School Psychologists and is a Fellow of PSCP: The Psychology Network.  He served as PSCP’s Secretary in the past and currently serves as the President of PSCP: The Psychology Network.  He fondly remembers the validation he felt when mentorship was offered to him during his training.  Over the course of his career, he has been a mentor to younger psychologists.   He revised the current PSCP mentoring program.

PSCP: The Psychology Network is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. PSCP: The Psychology Network maintains responsibility for its content.
