Sexual health and functioning is a key component of quality of life for most individuals. Sexual dysfunctions can have biological, psychological, social, cultural, or a combination of causes, and result in multifaceted difficulties. Persons experiencing sexual dysfunctions may present in a variety of ways. Practitioners need to be familiar with the etiologies of sexual dysfunctions, validated assessments, and interprofessional collaboration to make appropriate referrals for treatment.
This workshop will provide a roadmap to identifying the target areas for treatment for those who wish to increase sexual satisfaction, decrease dysfunction, and improve quality of life.
Following this presentation, participants will be able to:
Objectives:
- Recite or reference basic common statistics regarding sexual functioning in the U.S. to have an understanding of how to contextualize patients’ reported problems.
- Describe the sexual response cycle; sexual functioning and dysfunction.
- Discuss contemporary words used to describe conforming and nonconforming gender and sexual identities.
- Apply a biopsychosocial, interprofessional approach to assessment of sexual dysfunctions.
- Conduct a focused sexual health/dysfunction assessment in a medical setting.
