There is a lot of interest, currently, in the treatment of trauma and the dissociative disorders. Unfortunately, there is also a lot of need for well-trained psychotherapists to work in the field. It is the purpose of this presentation to share some of the wisdom gathered by therapists over the last few years about assessment, diagnosis, and treatment. Consideration will be given to differential diagnosis, to trauma processing, to managing the therapeutic relationship, and to dealing with transference-countertransference issues. Special consideration will be given to the treatment of severe forms of dissociation, such as Dissociative Identity Disorder. Case examples will be used to illustrate principles of diagnosis and treatment.

Objectives:

  1. Explain the importance of accurate diagnosis.
  2. List psychiatric illnesses that can be comorbid with or confused with a dissociative disorder.
  3. List the essential elements of treating trauma and dissociative disorders
  4. Demonstrate an understanding transference and countertransference issues.
  5. Discuss the measures needed for maintaining a good therapeutic relationship.
