The training will begin with a concise background discussion of what Stoic philosophy is and who the Stoics were so as to contextualize the influence of Stoicism on western and world culture and the continued value of Stoicism for modern life. Common misunderstandings and/or “surface” understandings of Stoicism will be identified. Stoicism’s influence in the development of psychotherapy (the rational psychotherapy in the early 20th century, the initial development of CBT by Ellis and Beck, and later mindfulness- and acceptance-based psychotherapies often known as third-wave CBT’s) will be examined. Stoicism’s congruence with therapies emphasizing the importance of value and goal clarification in Change will also be considered. Finally, how Stoic philosophy and practice can be utilized in middle and last-stage psychotherapy to promote individual growth and build a healthier and just world will be examined. The training will consist of a didactic component but with plenty of opportunities for questions and—it is hoped—thought-provoking discussion.
Objectives:
- Explain three ways in which Stoic philosophy/ethics contributed to the initial development of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy by Ellis and Beck.
- Describe three ways in which Stoicism is congruent with or influences mindfulness- and acceptance-based psychotherapies often described as third-wave CBT.
- List two widely known psychotherapies outside of the Cognitive Behavioral tradition that share an emphasis on value and goal-clarification with Stoicism and that can be integrated with it.
- Indicate three Stoic practices that can assist our clients with value- and goal-congruent living.
- Identify three ways in which Stoic practice can better our society and world.
