This workshop presents an innovative seven stage developmental model as a new tool for recognizing cognitions and attitudes—typical of different life stages–in order to select the most effective interventions when treating adult clients and couples. Based on Dr. Michael Broder’s book, Stage Climbing, this model is a system that combines some of the most robust elements of developmental theory with cognitive behavioral (CBT) practice. Participants will learn how to assess a client’s level of maturity in a given aspect of life, in order to formulate interventions that help install the cognitions and behaviors most consistent with therapeutic goals.
Workshop Objectives:
1. Apply Stage Climbing theory and related CBT techniques to their practices;
2. Use observable criteria to calibrate behaviors and cognitions;
3. Identify the stage (or developmental implication) that represents a dysfunctional cognition or pattern, underlying a presenting problem;
4. Learn strategies to help clients/patients clear away emotional obstacles that impair optimal functioning;
5. Select an appropriate therapeutic strategy consistent with the identified target stage.
