Understanding sexual diversity can be daunting. When it comes to language and terminology many people are at a loss, as terms can be complex and confusing. However, today, it is essential to be familiar with these concepts and to know how sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, and intersexuality differ. It has become increasingly important to understand and know how to use accurate language in order to best serve our clients and patients. Utilizing the latest in biological and social science research, this presentation will define these terms and concepts for a more nuanced approach to the subject.
Objectives:
- Discuss the difference between sex, gender, and orientation
- Explain at last 6 terms relating to sexual diversity
- Describe some of the distinct and complex ways that sexual diversity concepts are unique.
- Explain some of the distinct and complex ways that sexual diversity concepts are intertwined and connected.
- Plan ways to become an LGBTQ+ ally
