In this workshop we will focus on issues and challenges we face when we treat adolescents and young adults, such as when to include parents and family members in the therapy, how to address risky behavior, strategies to use when they are being pushed into therapy by parents, special considerations when treating teens via telepsychology. This workshop will also address this from a cultural, ethical, practical point of view. We will identify multiple considerations to assess in an effort to resolve the dilemmas that this age group presents. Also, we will focus on telepsychology considerations for this age group. Clinical examples will be used throughout the presentation and those who sign up are requested to provide a clinical situation, when possible, to discuss in the workshop. This presentation is geared toward those who have experience working with teens and young adults.
Objectives:
- Identify at least 3 common dilemmas therapists face when treating adolescents.
- Discuss how cultural diversity influences the treatment of adolescents.
- Apply a framework for conceptualizing alternative solutions to these dilemmas.
- State considerations regarding the use of telehealth for adolescents’ therapy.
- Identify 3 common ethical issues encountered when providing therapy to adolescents.
Sherry Pomerantz, Ph.D.– As a psychologist in private practice, Sherry Pomerantz has worked with children, adolescents, young adults and their families for over 25 years. Her particular interests include helping those with eating disorders and body image concerns; adolescent and emerging adult social-emotional development; family relationships; and providing parenting support and coaching. She has offices in Bala Cynwyd and Rosemont. Dr. Pomerantz received her PhD from Temple University and completed post-doctoral family therapy training. She has presented in numerous school and organizational settings to both parents and students on a variety of topics, including body image, recognizing eating disorders, parenting in the digital age, parent-teen communication.
Robert Jann, Ph.D. has practiced psychology for over 30 years. In that time he has worked with many children and teens in office settings. He gradually incorporated telehealth into his practice. Eventually, he transitioned to an exclusively Telehealth practice (eight months before anyone ever heard of Covid-19). His orientation was originally psychodynamic but later training has been in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. His approach to each client is eclectic, though, mindful of the client’s age, psychological development, needs and other characteristics. In addition to his clinical work, he spent over 30 years working as a school psychologist. Bob holds a PhD from Temple University’s School Psychology program and did a clinical internship at Eastern State School and Hospital. Bob is a member of the American Psychological Association, the Pennsylvania Psychological Association, the New Jersey Association of School Psychologists and is a Fellow of PSCP: The Psychology Network. He served as PSCP’s Secretary in the past and currently serves as President Elect of PSCP: The Psychology Network.
