With the divorce rate for couples over 50 having doubled in the past twenty years, and for those over 65, tripled, we are focused on strengthening relationships in the second half of life. We’ll cover the most recent research, the problems that can lead to divorce, statistics on the impact of divorce during this phase of life, and then address some of the biggest challenges to couples that are specific to this age group, with case examples and techniques for intervention.

Objectives:

  1. Recite the latest statistics around divorce in couples over 50.
  2. List the 10 biggest challenges to couples over 50.
  3. Describe a talking and listening intervention tailored to couples over 50.
  4. Apply steps for working on specific couples’ issues through case discussions.
  5. Utilize at least 3 skills for assessing and addressing this populations’ particular needs.

Julia L. Mayer, Psy.D. is a psychologist in private practice in Media, PA. She received her bachelor’s degree from The University of Pennsylvania and her Psy.D. from Widener University. She is author of the novel, A Fleeting State of Mind, and co-author of the 2016 book, AARP Meditations for Caregivers, as well as the recently released book, Love and Meaning After 50. She also has a weekly psychology and social justice podcast, Shrinks on Third.

Barry J. Jacobs, Psy.D. is a clinical psychologist, family therapist and Principal in the Philadelphia office of Health Management Associates, a national healthcare consulting firm. He also maintains a small private practice in Media, PA specializing in individuals, couples and families struggling with serious and chronic medical illnesses. A former magazine journalist, he writes a self-help column for family caregivers for AARP.org, is the author of The Emotional Survival Guide for Caregivers (2006, Guilford), and the coauthor (with Julia L. Mayer, Psy.D.) of AARP Meditations for Caregivers (2016, Da Capo) and AARP Love and Meaning After 50 (2020, Hachette).
